Fact-check note: We took the fees, dates and eligibility for IIM Nagpur, IIM Calcutta, IIM Indore and Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth from VCNow programme pages on 20 October 2026. MSc Data Science fees come from Careers360 college pages. Job numbers come from a 2023 NASSCOM report made with Salesforce and Draup.

The short answer

Yes. For most working professionals, a blended MBA in business analytics gives more value than an MSc Data Science. In the blended MBA vs MSc Data Science choice, the MSc teaches you to build data models. The MBA teaches you to use data to manage teams, products and budgets. However, an MSc is still a good choice for freshers who are strong in maths or coding and want a technical job.

Where VCNow fits: IIM Nagpur’s Blended MBA in Data Science & Management is a full 2-year MBA degree. It teaches Python, AI, GenAI and predictive analytics, along with finance, marketing, strategy and HR. It is meant for professionals with 3+ years of experience. The last date to apply for the March 2027 batch is 30 November 2026.

1. What is the real difference between a blended MBA and an MSc Data Science?

The main difference is the kind of job each programme prepares you for. An MSc Data Science is a technical degree. It goes deep into statistics, coding, machine learning and big data. On the other hand, a blended MBA in business analytics or data science is a management degree. It teaches you enough data science to lead analytics work. It also covers business subjects like finance, marketing, operations, strategy and HR.

The second big difference is how you study. Most MSc Data Science programmes in India are full-time and run for two years. For example, Bharathiar University, VIT Chennai and Chandigarh University all list a two-year, full-time MSc Data Science on Careers360. In contrast, a blended MBA lets you study on evenings and weekends while you keep working.

2. Who should choose an MSc Data Science, and who should choose a blended MBA?

The easiest way to decide is to look at your work experience. A full-time MSc Data Science is good for freshers and people early in their career. On the other hand, a blended MBA is good for people who already have a few years of work experience and want to grow, not start again.

An MSc Data Science suits you if…

✓You have 0-2 years of experience and can study full-time for two years.
✓Maths, statistics or computer science was part of your graduation.
✓You want to build data models and write code every day, as a data scientist or ML engineer.

A blended MBA suits you if…

✓You have 3+ years of work experience and do not want to give up your salary.
✓Your next goal is to manage an analytics team, a product or a business unit.
✓You want a full degree and an alumni network, not just a certificate.

Quick tip

Ask yourself one question: five years from now, do you want to build data models, or do you want to decide how the business uses them? If you want to build, choose an MSc. If you want to lead and decide, choose an MBA.

3. What roles can you expect after an MSc Data Science and a blended MBA?

Both programmes can lead to good jobs, but the jobs are different. According to a 2023 NASSCOM report with Salesforce and Draup, India needed 6,29,000 data science and AI professionals in August 2022. However, only 4,16,000 skilled people were available. This means there is a 51% gap between demand and supply, so skilled people are hard to find.

Typical roles after an MSc Data Science

MSc graduates usually get technical jobs. The same NASSCOM report found that five roles make up 73% of AI job openings in India: ML engineer, data engineer, data scientist, data architect and DevOps engineer. Most MSc graduates start as data analysts, junior data scientists or ML engineers. With time, they grow into senior technical roles.

Typical roles after a blended MBA in business analytics

After a blended MBA, people usually move into jobs that link data with business decisions. Common roles include analytics manager, product manager, business intelligence lead and data strategy consultant. Later, these can lead to head of analytics or chief data officer roles. Since you already have 3+ years of experience in your field, you can often get promoted in your current company. You do not have to start again at entry level.

Why the MBA path can help you grow faster

Technical teams build the models. But someone has to manage the budget, lead the team and take responsibility for results. Companies usually give these leadership jobs to people who understand both data and business. An MBA in data science and management builds exactly this mix.

4. Is a blended MBA worth the money? A simple example

If you only look at fees, an MSc Data Science looks cheaper. On Careers360, total fees range from about ₹35,600 at Bharathiar University to about ₹2.2 lakh at Chandigarh University’s UP campus. In comparison, IIM Nagpur’s Blended MBA costs ₹12,10,000. However, fees are not the full cost. A full-time course also means you lose your salary for two years.

Example: Priya, an operations manager with 6 years of experience

Let us take a simple example. Priya is 30 years old and works as an operations manager in Pune. She earns ₹12 lakh a year and wants to become an analytics manager in the next three years.

Option A — Full-time MSc Data Science: about ₹2 lakh in fees, plus ₹24 lakh of salary lost over two years. Total cost: about ₹26 lakh. After the course, she will most likely restart in a junior data job.
Option B — IIM Nagpur Blended MBA: ₹12.1 lakh in fees and no salary loss, because she keeps working. Total cost: ₹12.1 lakh. At the end, she has an IIM MBA, 8 years of experience and a strong profile for an analytics manager role.

In this example, the blended MBA costs Priya less than half of the full-time MSc. More importantly, she does not take a break from her career. Please note that this is only an example with rounded numbers. Do the same calculation with your own salary before you decide.

5. Can a non-technical person succeed in an MSc Data Science?

Yes, but it is harder, so you need to plan for it. Many MSc Data Science programmes in India want maths, statistics or computer science in your graduation. For example, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University asks students without these subjects to take extra bridge courses. Similarly, VIT Chennai asks for a science or engineering degree with 60% marks.

Non-technical students can still do well if they start preparing early. Before the course begins, learn basic Python, school-level statistics and Excel. Most people need a few months of regular practice to feel confident, so start early.

An easier path for non-technical professionals

If you work in sales, HR, finance or operations, a blended MBA is an easier way to get into data. IIM Nagpur accepts a bachelor’s degree in any subject, or CA/CWA/CS, with at least 50% marks. The programme then teaches you step by step, from Python and R to predictive analytics, NLP and GenAI. At the same time, your work experience helps you in class discussions and in the 60-hour field project.

6. Blended MBA vs MSc Data Science vs other options: comparison table

The table below compares IIM Nagpur’s Blended MBA with a typical Indian MSc Data Science and three other programmes on VCNow. Fees are as given by each institute. GST is extra where mentioned.

Programme Degree or certificate Duration & format Fees Brand & network What you learn
IIM Nagpur Blended MBA in Data Science & Management Full MBA degree + IIM alumni status 2 years, blended; you keep your job ₹12,10,000 total NIRF top-25 (2025), four campus visits Data science, AI and full MBA subjects
Typical MSc Data Science (India) Master’s degree 2 years, full-time; you leave your job About ₹35,600 to ₹2.2 lakh, plus lost salary Depends on the university; classmates are mostly freshers Only technical; very little management
IIM Calcutta Advanced Programme in Data Sciences Certificate 12 months ₹4,80,000 + 18% GST Triple accredited, NIRF #4 (2023) Only data science
IIM Indore Integrated Programme in Business Analytics Certificate 10 months ₹3,20,000 + GST Triple Crown, NIRF #8 Only analytics
Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth Online MBA (Business Analytics) MBA degree, AICTE & UGC approved 2 years, fully online ₹1,89,400 NAAC A-grade; no campus time MBA with an analytics specialisation

How to read this table

The MSc and the D.Y. Patil MBA cost less. However, neither gives you an IIM degree, and the MSc means you stop working for two years. IIM Calcutta and IIM Indore are excellent brands, but these programmes give a certificate, not a degree. Only IIM Nagpur’s Blended MBA gives you a full IIM degree, strong data science skills and complete management training, while you keep your job.

7. How to decide between a blended MBA and an MSc Data Science: a 5-point checklist

Still confused? Go through these five points before you fill any application form.

1Check your experience. If you have 3+ years of work experience, a blended MBA is usually better than going back to full-time study.
2Count the full cost. Add the salary you will lose to the fees before you compare.
3Think about the job you want. Choose an MSc to build data models. Choose an MBA to lead teams that use data.
4Compare degree and certificate. A degree with alumni status has more value on your CV than a certificate.
5Plan your time. Weekend classes and four campus visits need planning, so talk to your employer and family early.
