The short answer
The data scientist salary in India ranges from ₹5–9 LPA for freshers to ₹30–60 LPA and above for leads. Across the big salary platforms, the average sits between ₹10 LPA and ₹15 LPA. However, the biggest jumps go to people who combine data science with GenAI skills and business leadership.
Where VCNow fits: If you have 3+ years of work experience and want to move from hands-on analysis into data and AI leadership, the IIM Nagpur Blended MBA in Data Science & Management gives you both skill sets in one full MBA degree. In contrast, short certificates such as the IIM Calcutta Advanced Programme in Data Sciences build technical depth but do not award a degree.
What this article covers
1. Data scientist salary in India by experience
Experience still sets the base of your pay. Typical salaries roughly double between the first year and the fifth year, and they double again by year ten.
Pay grows about six times from fresher to lead

That said, the employer matters as much as the years. According to Instahyre hiring data, a data scientist with five years of experience earns ₹14–22 LPA at an IT services firm. In contrast, the same profile earns ₹25–42 LPA at an Indian unicorn and ₹40–65 LPA at a top GCC such as Goldman Sachs or JPMorgan Chase.
What freshers can expect
Most freshers start at ₹5–9 LPA. IT services firms pay ₹4.5–7 LPA, while Indian product companies pay ₹10–18 LPA and top GCCs pay ₹15–25 LPA, as per Instahyre (May 2026).
2. Data scientist salary per month: your in-hand pay
A data scientist earning ₹12 LPA takes home about ₹85,500–₹94,000 every month and pays no income tax in FY 2026-27. This is because Budget 2026 kept the new-regime slabs, the ₹75,000 standard deduction and the ₹12 lakh rebate unchanged, so salaries up to about ₹12.75 lakh stay tax-free.
| Annual CTC | Annual income tax (new regime) | Approx. monthly in-hand |
|---|---|---|
| ₹6 LPA | ₹0 | ₹42,500–₹45,000 |
| ₹9 LPA | ₹0 | ₹64,000–₹69,500 |
| ₹12 LPA | ₹0 | ₹85,500–₹94,000 |
| ₹18 LPA | ₹1.2–1.4 lakh | ₹1,18,000–₹1,31,000 |
| ₹25 LPA | ₹2.6–3.0 lakh | ₹1,56,000–₹1,75,000 |
| ₹35 LPA | ₹5.4–6.0 lakh | ₹2,04,000–₹2,31,000 |
How we worked this out: basic pay at 50% of CTC, PF at 12% of basic (lower figure) or capped at ₹1,800 a month (higher figure), gratuity inside CTC, ₹2,400 professional tax, 4% cess and no variable pay. Your own figure will change with your company’s salary structure.
Check the fixed part of every offer
Many companies keep 10–20% of CTC as variable pay. On a ₹20 LPA offer with 15% variable, ₹3 lakh comes once a year as a bonus, not in your monthly salary. So always ask how much of the CTC is fixed.
3. Which cities and companies pay data scientists the most
Bengaluru pays data scientists the most, at about ₹16–20 LPA on a typical average. Meanwhile, tier-2 cities such as Kochi, Coimbatore and Indore pay 20–25% less than the metros, according to Instahyre.

Rankings do change with the source, though. Indeed’s August 2026 base-pay data places Pune (₹13.66 LPA) and Mumbai (₹13.64 LPA) ahead of Bengaluru (₹12.54 LPA). Base-pay samples miss much of the stock and bonus that Bengaluru’s product companies pay.

Global Capability Centres (GCCs) have become the fastest-growing employer of data talent. The Nasscom-Zinnov 2026 report counts more than 2,100 GCCs with over 2.3 million employees. On top of that, 64% of new GCC roles created in 2026 need AI, data science or automation skills, as per the foundit Insights Tracker. GCCs also pay 12–20% more than IT services firms, and AI and data science roles there earn a further 30–50% premium, says the 1 Finance Global Economic Outlook Report 2026.

4. The GenAI premium: why AI skills pay 25–50% more
Data scientists with production GenAI, LLM and MLOps skills earn 25–50% more than generalists at the same experience level. Specialists who work on foundation models can earn up to double. The reason is simple: demand is growing much faster than supply.

For instance, TeamLease Digital’s Digital Skills & Salary Primer FY2026–27 puts GenAI developers at ₹11.2 LPA with 0–2 years of experience. With 6–8 years, that figure rises to ₹34.5 LPA.

Neeti Sharma, CEO, TeamLease Digital (September 2026)
In simple words, technical skill alone is not enough. The highest pay goes to people who understand both the model and the business problem it solves. This is exactly the gap that a management degree with a strong data science core is built to fill.
5. How an MBA in data science and management lifts your salary
After about five years, many data scientists hit a ceiling. Senior and lead roles ask for people management, budgeting, stakeholder handling and strategy, along with technical depth. As a result, professionals start looking for a programme that adds business leadership without asking them to quit their jobs.
The IIM Nagpur Blended MBA in Data Science & Management is built for exactly this stage. It teaches Python and R, AI foundations, GenAI and agentic AI, NLP and analytics, alongside the full MBA core of finance, marketing, operations, strategy and HR.
A realistic example: Priya’s salary path
Priya is a data analyst in Pune with four years of experience at an IT services firm. She earns ₹9 LPA, or about ₹64,000 a month in hand. In March 2027, she joins the IIM Nagpur programme and keeps her job through the two years.
By the end of the MBA, Priya has six years of experience, GenAI and NLP skills, a field project and an IIM degree on her CV. For a profile like hers, market data shows mid-level data science roles at product companies paying ₹18–32 LPA, while top GCCs pay more. Suppose she moves to a ₹20 LPA role. Her gross pay then rises by ₹11 lakh a year, and her monthly in-hand grows to about ₹1,29,000.
In that case, the first-year gain alone almost covers the ₹12,10,000 fee. Of course, this is an illustration and not a placement promise. Actual outcomes depend on your skills, your interviews and the job market.
6. IIM Nagpur MBA vs other data science programmes: a comparison
Data professionals usually choose between four kinds of programmes: an IIM MBA with a data science focus, a general IIM online MBA, a short IIM certificate or a low-cost online MBA. Here is how they compare on the points that matter most for salary growth.
| Programme | Credential | Duration | Fees | Data science + management | Format and network |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Nagpur Blended MBA in Data Science & Management | Full MBA degree + IIM alumni status | 2 years | ₹12,10,000 | Yes, both in one degree | Blended, with four 5-day campus immersions |
| IIM Ahmedabad Blended PGP (Online MBA) | Full MBA degree + IIMA alumni status | 2 years (up to 3) | ₹20,00,000 | General MBA, no data science focus | Blended |
| IIM Calcutta Advanced Programme in Data Sciences | Certificate | 12 months | ₹4,80,000 + 18% GST | Data science only | Executive certificate cohort |
| IIM Indore Integrated Programme in Business Analytics | Certificate | 10 months | ₹3,20,000 + GST | Analytics only | Executive certificate cohort |
| Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth Online MBA | MBA degree (AICTE and UGC approved) | 2 years | ₹1,89,400 | AI & ML specialisation option | Fully online, no campus time |
How to read this table
Among IIM MBA degrees, IIM Nagpur’s programme costs ₹7,90,000 less than the IIMA Blended PGP and is the only one built around data science. The IIM Calcutta and IIM Indore options cost less, but they award certificates, not an MBA degree.
On the other hand, the D.Y. Patil Online MBA is the cheapest degree here. Still, it does not offer the IIM brand, IIM alumni status or in-person campus networking. For a salary move into data and AI leadership, IIM Nagpur gives the strongest mix of degree, brand and data focus.
