The short answer
AI now handles data processing, basic reporting and routine forecasts in almost every function. What it cannot do well is set direction, judge trade-offs, lead people and take ethical responsibility. The safest MBA specialisation is therefore one that teaches you to use AI tools and also to lead the humans and decisions around them.
Where VCNow fits: IIM Nagpur’s Blended MBA in Data Science & Management builds both sides in one degree: Python, GenAI and agentic AI, alongside finance, marketing, operations, strategy and HR. It costs ₹12,10,000 and you study while you keep working.
What this article covers
1. AI and the future of work
AI has moved from experiment to everyday tool. McKinsey’s State of AI 2025 survey of 1,993 participants found that 88% of organisations use AI in at least one business function, and 79% use generative AI. However, only 7% say AI is fully scaled across the organisation, so most companies are still learning how to use it well.
The skills employers want are shifting just as fast. The WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025 says employers expect 39% of workers’ core skills to change by 2030. In simple terms, two in every five skills you use today may look different in five years.
Here is how the work is splitting between machines and people:
| Automated by AI | Led by humans |
|---|---|
| Data processing and cleaning | Setting vision and direction |
| Basic reporting and dashboards | Strategic decisions and trade-offs |
| Resume screening | Final hiring judgement and negotiation |
| Trend predictions and forecasts | Crisis management and creative problem-solving |
Adapted from Shiv Nadar University’s comparison of AI and human strengths (November 2025).
2. What machines still can’t learn, but MBA graduates can
Employers already rank human skills above most technical ones. The chart below shows the share of employers who call each skill a core skill for their workforce in 2025, from the WEF Future of Jobs Report.

Two of these human skills are also rising fastest. Compared with the 2023 edition, the share of employers rating leadership and social influence as core rose by 22 percentage points, and resilience, flexibility and agility rose by 17 points. These are the areas where an MBA adds the most.
Emotional intelligence and empathy
AI can read sentiment in text, but it cannot sit with an upset client or calm a worried team. Half of employers in the WEF survey list empathy and active listening as a core skill. Managers who handle people well keep teams together during change.
Creativity and innovation
Generative AI can produce many ideas quickly, yet someone still has to pick the right one and make it work in a real market. Creative thinking is a core skill for 57% of employers, and the WEF lists it among the skills growing in importance by 2030.
Strategic decision-making
Models give you options and probabilities. Leaders decide which risk to take, how much to invest and when to stop. As Shiv Nadar University’s blog puts it, “Machines can analyse data; however, it is humans who define the value of that data.”
Ethics, negotiation and accountability
When an AI system makes a wrong call, a person is still answerable for it. Leaders must check for bias, protect customer data and negotiate fair outcomes. In India, the DPDP Act 2023 allows penalties of up to ₹250 crore per breach, which makes responsible data use a board-level concern.
3. Best MBA specialisations for an AI-driven future
Every specialisation is changing, but not in the same way. The map below shows, for each common MBA specialisation, what AI is taking over, what stays human and how much of the routine work AI can reach.
| Specialisation | What AI takes over | What stays human | AI reach into routine work | Salary range (estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General management | Reports, scheduling, basic analysis | Vision, leading people, cross-team decisions | Low | ₹7–25 LPA |
| Finance | Reconciliation, forecasting, fraud flags | Capital allocation, risk judgement, investor trust | High | ₹8–25 LPA |
| Marketing | Ad targeting, content drafts, segmentation | Brand story, customer insight, creative calls | Medium | ₹7–30 LPA |
| Business analytics | Data cleaning, dashboards, routine models | Framing problems, checking models, storytelling | High | ₹10–30 LPA |
| Human resources | Resume screening, attendance, attrition alerts | Hiring judgement, culture, conflict resolution | Medium | ₹6–20 LPA |
| Supply chain | Demand forecasts, routing, inventory planning | Supplier negotiation, crisis response | High | ₹7–23 LPA |
| Artificial intelligence | Code generation, model tuning | Choosing use cases, governance, ethics | Medium | ₹12–32 LPA |
| Entrepreneurship | Market research, first-draft plans | Vision, risk-taking, fundraising | Low | ₹7–25 LPA |
| International business | Translation, trade data analysis | Cross-cultural negotiation, relationships | Low | ₹9–28 LPA |
| Healthcare management | Scheduling, claims, diagnostic support | Patient-care decisions, ethics, staff leadership | Medium | ₹6–20 LPA |
“AI reach” is a VCNow editorial assessment of how much routine work in each area AI tools can already do. It is not a measure of job loss. Salary ranges are estimates published by Shiv Nadar University (November 2025).
Two patterns stand out. First, AI touches every specialisation, so every MBA graduate now needs basic data and AI fluency. Second, the specialisations with the strongest outlook combine that fluency with a human core, such as leadership in general management or judgement in finance.
Every specialisation now needs AI fluency
AI skills are no longer only for tech roles. Naukri’s World AI Day Report 2026 found that AI skills appeared in 1.59% of non-technology job postings in India in 2026, about six times the 0.26% share in 2020. In technology roles, the share jumped from 0.9% to 15.4% over the same period.
This means a finance manager, an HR head or a marketing lead will increasingly be asked how they use AI in their work. You do not need to build models yourself. Still, you should be able to read a model’s output, ask whether the data behind it is sound and explain the result to your team in plain words. A specialisation that builds this comfort, while also deepening your human skills, keeps you useful as the tools keep changing.
Why data science plus management stands out
Gartner predicts that through 2026, organisations will abandon 60% of AI projects that lack AI-ready data. The people who prevent that loss understand both the data and the business, which is exactly the mix a data science and management MBA builds.
4. How to choose the right MBA specialisation in the AI era
Use these four questions to narrow your choice:
Here is how the main options on VCNow compare:
| Programme | Credential | Fee | AI & data | Management breadth | Experience |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Nagpur Blended MBA in Data Science & Management | Full MBA degree + alumni status | ₹12,10,000 all-in | Core: Python/R, GenAI, agentic AI, NLP | Finance, marketing, ops, strategy, HR | 3+ years |
| IIM Ahmedabad Blended PGP (Online MBA) | Full MBA degree + alumni status | ₹20,00,000 | Not the main focus | Full general management | 3+ years + CAT/GMAT/GRE/IAT |
| Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth Online MBA | Online MBA degree | ₹1,89,400 | Optional AI & ML track | 15+ specialisations | Not specified |
| IIM Nagpur Emerging CFOs (PGECFO) | Certificate + alumni status | ₹2,61,000 | Not the main focus | Finance leadership | 5+ years |
| IIM Indore Emerging CHRO (PGCHRO) | Certificate | ₹3,97,500 + 18% GST | Not the main focus | HR leadership | 10+ years |
How to read this table
If you already know your function, the finance and HR certificates are cheaper, faster ways to step into a CFO or CHRO track, though they are not degrees. IIM Ahmedabad gives the strongest general-management brand, and D.Y. Patil the lowest cost. For someone who wants both AI fluency and broad leadership skills in one full degree, IIM Nagpur is the most complete match for an AI-driven workplace.
5. A worked example: choosing between HR and data
Take a hypothetical professional, Priyanka, aged 32. She is an HR business partner at a large IT services firm in Pune, with 8 years of experience and a salary of ₹16 lakh a year. Her company has started using AI for resume screening and attrition prediction.
She could take a pure HR certificate and deepen her people skills. However, she notices that the HR leaders being promoted are the ones who can question the AI tools and explain the numbers to the board.
So she joins IIM Nagpur’s blended MBA while keeping her job. Over two years, she studies HR in the Digital Age and strategy alongside Python, data mining and AI foundations. Her 60-hour field project tests the company’s attrition model for bias. That mix of human judgement and data skill is exactly what machines cannot replace, and it positions her for an HR analytics or people-strategy leadership role. These details are illustrative, not a promise of any specific outcome.
Build the career AI can’t replace
Combine AI and data skills with the leadership, strategy and judgement that machines lack, in one IIM degree you study while working. Applications close on 30 November 2026.
6. Conclusion: choosing an MBA specialisation in an AI-driven world
AI will keep taking over routine analysis in every function. The MBA specialisations that hold their value teach you to work with AI and to do what it cannot: lead people, judge risk, think creatively and act ethically. For working professionals, an MBA that blends data science with full management training covers both sides in one step.
7. Frequently asked questions
Which MBA specialisation is most in demand in the AI era?
Specialisations that mix data skills with leadership are in strong demand, such as business analytics and data science with management. The WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025 finds analytical thinking is a core skill for 69% of employers, and leadership for 61%.
Is an MBA still relevant in an AI world?
Yes. AI handles routine analysis, but companies still need people to set direction, lead teams and judge risk. McKinsey’s 2025 survey found 88% of organisations use AI but only 7% have fully scaled it, which shows how much leadership work remains.
Which MBA specialisation offers the highest salary?
In estimates published by Shiv Nadar University, artificial intelligence (₹12-32 LPA) and business analytics (₹10-30 LPA) sit at the top, followed closely by marketing and international business. Actual pay depends on your experience, company and role.
What skills can machines not learn?
Machines struggle with empathy, original creativity, strategic judgement, ethics and negotiation. These skills grow through practice with people, which is why live classes, group work and campus time matter in an MBA.
Which MBA combines AI skills with human leadership skills?
IIM Nagpur’s Blended MBA in Data Science & Management teaches Python, GenAI and agentic AI alongside strategy, HR, ethics and leadership communication. It is a full IIM degree that costs ₹12,10,000 and runs while you keep working.
