Fact-check note: Programme facts come from the official IIM Nagpur programme page on learn.vcnow.in and the IIM Indore programme page, both checked on 28 October 2026. Industry data comes from PwC, Gartner, McKinsey, EY-CII, Deloitte-NASSCOM, TeamLease Digital and the World Economic Forum. Every source is listed at the end of this article.

The short answer

A Generative and Agentic AI programme for data science and management teaches how AI creates content and how AI agents complete multi-step work, plus the data skills and management judgement to turn both into business results. For working professionals with 3+ years of experience, the IIM Nagpur Blended MBA in Data Science & Management is the strongest option, because it covers GenAI and agentic AI inside a full MBA degree, not a short certificate.

Where VCNow fits: VCNow is the admissions partner for this inaugural batch. Applications close on 30 November 2026, the entrance test is on 22 November 2026, and classes begin on 15 March 2027.

1. What is a Generative and Agentic AI programme for data science and management?

It is a learning programme that combines three layers: data science, Generative AI (GenAI) and agentic AI, plus the management skills to lead all three. In simple words, data science helps you read the past, GenAI helps you create, and agentic AI helps you get work done with less manual effort.

A blended format mixes live online classes with time on campus. As a result, you keep your job while you study and still build a peer network in person.

How the three layers of AI differ

Layer 1 · Machine learning
Predicts
Learns patterns from data. For instance, it forecasts next month’s demand or flags a risky loan.
Layer 2 · Generative AI
Creates
Writes reports, summarises contracts, drafts emails and answers questions from company documents.
Layer 3 · Agentic AI
Acts
Plans steps, uses tools and finishes tasks, such as checking invoices and raising purchase orders, with a human in the loop.

Managers need all three layers, plus the judgement to decide where each one adds value.

2. Why Generative and agentic AI skills are the fastest career multiplier in 2026

The short reason is money and demand. Companies want AI skills, and they pay more for them. Here are three numbers that every working professional should know.

The AI wage premium more than doubled in one year

PwC studied close to a billion job ads across six continents. Its 2025 report found that AI-skilled workers earn 56% more than peers in the same role, up from 25% in the previous year’s study. Moreover, jobs that need AI skills grew 7.5% even as total job postings fell 11.3%.

That said, PwC’s Global Workforce Leader, Pete Brown, warns that AI skills “can quickly become out of date” without continuous learning. Therefore, you need a deep foundation, not a one-time crash course.

Agentic AI is moving from pilots to everyday software

Gartner expects AI agents to spread fast inside business software. According to Gartner analyst Anushree Verma, agents are moving “to task-specific agents by 2026 and ultimately multiagent ecosystems by 2029.”

The real gap is leadership, not tools

Most companies already use AI somewhere. However, very few turn it into real profit. McKinsey’s State of AI 2025 survey of 1,993 respondents across 105 countries shows how sharply the numbers fall at each stage.

McKinsey sums up the problem clearly. In its words, most organisations have “not yet embedded AI technologies deeply enough into their workflows” to see enterprise-level gains. Similarly, Gartner predicts that over 40% of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by the end of 2027 because of rising costs, unclear business value or weak risk controls.

What this means for your career

Companies do not lack AI tools. Instead, they lack managers who can pick the right use case, check the ROI, manage risk and scale what works. That is exactly the gap a data science plus management degree fills.

India needs lakhs more AI-ready professionals

India’s demand is even sharper. A Deloitte India and NASSCOM report projects that AI talent demand will grow from 6–6.5 lakh to more than 12.5 lakh by 2027. Meanwhile, TeamLease Digital’s Digital Skills & Salary Primer FY2026–27 finds that only about 16% of IT professionals have AI skills, and it puts the GenAI talent gap at about 53%.

Globally, the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 names AI and big data as the fastest-growing skill set to 2030, with a net gain of 78 million jobs. These jobs will go to people who combine AI fluency with business judgement.

4. What the Generative and agentic AI curriculum covers, term by term

Most MBAs treat AI as a single elective. In contrast, IIM Nagpur runs data and AI through every term, starting with Python and ending with agentic AI in the enterprise. The journey below shows how the layers build on each other.

Your 2-year learning journey

Year 1 · Term I
Introduction to Computing (Python/R), Introduction to Data Science, Economics Foundations, Marketing Management
Year 1 · Term II
Probability and Statistics, Data Visualization, Understanding Financial Statements, Corporate Finance, Operations and Supply Chain Management
Year 1 · Term III
Optimization Models, Artificial Intelligence Foundations, HRM in the Digital Age, Indian Ethos, Digital Law & Ethics
Year 1 · Term IV
Managing and Using Information Systems, Data Mining, Research Methods, Strategic Management
Year 2 · GenAI and agentic AI electives
Generative AI for Managers, Application of GenAI and Analytics into Enterprise Strategy, Agentic AI, Agentic AI Models and Applications in Enterprise, Implementing AI in Your Organization, Conversational AI and Virtual Assistance, Natural Language Processing, Ethics, Privacy and Regulations in AI
Year 2 · Analytics electives
Prescriptive Analytics, Managerial Predictive Analytics, Time Series Analysis and Forecasting, Recommendation Systems, Data Monetization and Governance, Operations Analytics, among others
Finale · Field project
A minimum of 300 hours across electives and leadership sessions, ending with the mandatory 60-hour field project

Notice the order: data first, AI foundations next, and GenAI and agents last. As a result, you understand why an AI output may be wrong, not just how to prompt it.

5. What skills will you gain from this blended MBA?

By the end of two years, you should be able to do six things with confidence.

01  Explain how machine learning, GenAI and agentic AI work, and where each fits in a business.
02  Clean, analyse and visualise data in Python or R to support decisions.
03  Spot workflows where AI agents can save time, then judge each idea on feasibility and ROI.
04  Build an AI adoption roadmap linked to business goals and KPIs.
05  Apply data governance, privacy and AI ethics rules before you scale a solution.
06  Lead finance, marketing, operations, HR and strategy decisions with the full MBA toolkit.

6. Who should apply for a Generative and agentic AI MBA?

This programme suits you if two or more of these lines describe you:

Mid-to-senior managers who want to move into their next role faster.
Functional leaders in marketing, finance, operations or HR who want enterprise-level roles.
IT and technology professionals ready to shift from building systems to leading businesses.
Family business owners and founders who need frameworks to scale with data.
Anyone with 3+ years of experience who wants to lead, not just execute, in an AI-driven company.

You do not need a coding background. The preparatory bridge and Term I teach statistics and Python from the basics, using business examples.

7. Who leads the programme at IIM Nagpur?

Prof. Sujeet Kumar Sharma is the Programme Director. He is a Professor in the Decision Science & Information Systems area at IIM Nagpur, with over 23 years of teaching experience across India, Oman and Bahrain. His research covers AI, blockchain, social media and IT for disaster management, with 40 international journal publications.

Earlier, he directed the MBA programme at Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat. IIM Nagpur itself was founded in 2015 under the mentorship of IIM Ahmedabad and now ranks in India’s NIRF top 25 (2025).

8. Degree or certificate? How Generative and agentic AI programmes compare

Many IIMs now offer AI programmes. The table below compares the IIM Nagpur Blended MBA with three well-known alternatives on the same criteria.

Programme Credential Duration & format GenAI + agentic AI + data science Full management core Fee
IIM Nagpur Blended MBA in Data Science & Management Full MBA degree + alumni status 2 years; live online + four 5-day campus immersions Yes, all three, across 8 terms + field project Yes (finance, marketing, ops, strategy, HR) ₹12,10,000 all-in
IIM Indore Executive Programme in Generative and Agentic AI for Business Applications Certificate (executive alumni status at extra fee) 24 weeks; online, mostly recorded GenAI and agentic AI, no-code; limited data science No ₹1,60,000 + GST
IIM Ahmedabad Executive Programme in AI for Business Certificate 6–7 months AI for business focus No ₹3,20,000 + GST
IIM Calcutta Advanced Programme in Data Sciences Certificate 12 months Data science focus No ₹4,80,000 + 18% GST

How to read this table honestly

If you only want a quick, low-cost introduction to GenAI tools, IIM Indore’s 24-week certificate is cheaper and faster. Likewise, IIMA and IIMC certificates suit people who want one focused skill.

However, a certificate does not change your qualification. The IIM Nagpur Blended MBA is the only option here that gives you a full MBA degree, covers GenAI, agentic AI and data science in depth, and adds campus immersions and a real field project. Spread over 24 months, its fee works out to about ₹50,400 a month.

9. A real-world example: what an agentic AI field project can look like

Consider Ritu (an illustrative profile), a 34-year-old procurement manager at a Pune auto-parts company with 8 years of experience. Her team checks about 1,200 supplier invoices every month. Each manual check takes around 20 minutes, which adds up to roughly 400 working hours a month.

During her Year 2 electives, she learns agentic AI design and AI governance. Next, for her 60-hour field project, she maps an agent that matches invoices with purchase orders, flags mismatches and sends only exceptions to her team. In her pilot plan, review time drops to about 6 minutes per invoice. That would free nearly 280 hours a month, the equal of almost two full-time roles moved to supplier negotiation.

More importantly, Ritu builds the ROI case, sets human-in-the-loop approval rules and presents a roll-out plan to her CFO. A short tools course rarely teaches this mix of AI skill and management judgement.

10. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Generative AI and agentic AI?

Generative AI creates content such as text, summaries and images when you give it a prompt. Agentic AI goes a step further: it plans a series of steps, uses tools and completes a task, such as matching invoices to purchase orders, with a human checking the key decisions.

Do I need coding experience to join the IIM Nagpur Blended MBA in Data Science & Management?

No. The programme starts with a preparatory bridge in maths, statistics and analytics, and Term I teaches Python or R from the basics using business examples.

Is this a full MBA degree or a certificate?

It is a full, UGC-recognised MBA degree conferred by IIM Nagpur at its Annual Convocation, along with IIM Nagpur Alumni status. Most executive AI programmes, by comparison, award a certificate of completion.

What is the fee, and can I pay in instalments?

The total programme fee is ₹12,10,000. You pay ₹1,00,000 as an offer acceptance fee, followed by four instalments of ₹1,98,750, ₹3,06,250, ₹2,98,750 and ₹3,06,250. A separate application fee of ₹2,500 applies.

What are the key dates for the March 2027 batch?

The online entrance test is on 22 November 2026 and personal interviews are on 29 November 2026. Applications close on 30 November 2026, results come out on 1 December 2026, and the batch starts on 15 March 2027.
