The short answer
If you are a fresher choosing a two-year PGP, IIM Lucknow gives the best fee-to-salary ratio in 2026, at 1.60x. If you already earn a good salary, the picture changes. Leaving your job for two years can add ₹30 lakh or more to the real cost of a full-time MBA, so a blended IIM MBA usually gives a working professional the better ROI.
Where VCNow fits: IIM Nagpur’s Blended MBA in Data Science & Management costs ₹12,10,000 in total, the lowest of the IIM MBA degrees listed on VCNow, and you keep earning throughout. IIM Ahmedabad’s Blended PGP is the premium alternative at ₹20,00,000.
What this article covers
1. IIM with best ROI in 2026: how fees compare with average salaries
Return on investment, or ROI, tells you how quickly an MBA pays for itself. Cracku’s 2026 ranking uses a simple formula: average annual CTC divided by the total programme fee. A ratio of 1.60x means the average first-year salary is 1.6 times the fee.
This formula works well for freshers. It has two limits, though. First, CTC includes parts such as bonuses and retirement benefits that do not reach your bank account every month. Second, it ignores the salary you give up while you study, which is the biggest cost for anyone with work experience.
Keep both points in mind as you read the rankings below. We cover the full-time picture first, then show how ROI works when you study without leaving your job.
2. IIM ROI ranking 2026: fees vs average salary of all IIMs
The table below lists approximate two-year PGP fees and average CTCs for 22 IIMs, as compiled by Cracku in August 2026. Treat these as indicative figures, since each institute reports placements in its own way.

3. Which IIMs have the best ROI in 2026?
IIM Lucknow stands out. Its 2026 final placements covered 559 students with 580+ offers, an average CTC of ₹33.2 LPA and a median of ₹32.9 LPA, according to Career Launcher’s summary of the institute’s data. With a fee of about ₹20.75 lakh, that gives the highest ratio of any IIM.
The other old IIMs sit just behind. Bangalore, Calcutta and Ahmedabad all report average CTCs of around ₹34 lakh, but their fees of ₹26.5-27.5 lakh pull their ratios down to 1.25-1.32x.
Among established IIMs, Kozhikode leads. Its Final Placements Report 2025 shows an average CTC of ₹28.18 LPA, a median of ₹27.50 LPA and 169 recruiters. Indore follows at 1.18x.
All IIMs: fee-to-salary snapshot
| IIM category | Strong ROI examples |
|---|---|
| Old IIMs | Lucknow, Bangalore, Calcutta, Ahmedabad |
| Established IIMs | Kozhikode, Indore, Shillong, Mumbai |
| Newer IIMs | Ranchi, Rohtak, Raipur |
| Emerging IIMs | Nagpur, Udaipur, Tiruchirappalli, Kashipur |
| Youngest IIMs | Bodh Gaya, Jammu, Sambalpur, Sirmaur, Amritsar, Visakhapatnam, Guwahati |
Audited numbers are more reliable
Look for placement reports checked against the Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS). For example, InsideIIM notes that B2K Analytics audited IIM Ahmedabad’s 2026 report and found “zero deviations from IPRS Revision 2.2.” That report shows 392 offers from 182 firms, with an average guaranteed cash component of ₹32,46,782.
4. Top IIMs with the fastest MBA fee recovery
Another way to read ROI is to ask how many months of salary it takes to equal the fee. This is a simple maths comparison, not a real repayment plan, because tax, living costs and loan interest all slow things down.
| IIM | Fee | Average CTC | Fee equals about |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Lucknow | ₹20.75 lakh | ₹33.20 LPA | 7.5 months of CTC |
| IIM Bangalore | ₹26.50 lakh | ₹34.88 LPA | 9.1 months of CTC |
| IIM Calcutta | ₹27.00 lakh | ₹34.23 LPA | 9.5 months of CTC |
| IIM Ahmedabad | ₹27.50 lakh | ₹34.45 LPA | 9.6 months of CTC |
| IIM Kozhikode | ₹23.58 lakh | ₹28.18 LPA | 10.0 months of CTC |
| IIM Indore | ₹25.15 lakh | ₹29.57 LPA | 10.2 months of CTC |
5. Old IIMs vs new IIMs: which offers better ROI?
Old IIMs win clearly on full-time ROI. All four old IIMs in Cracku’s grouping score 1.25x or higher, because top recruiters in consulting, finance and technology pay them close to ₹34 lakh on average.
Newer IIMs charge similar fees but earn lower average salaries. As a result, most IIMs set up after 2010 score below 1.0x in Cracku’s table. The youngest IIMs, such as Amritsar, Sambalpur and Sirmaur, sit between 0.71x and 0.76x.
IIM Nagpur’s full-time PGP falls in this middle group. Cracku reports an average CTC of ₹18.08 LPA and a median of ₹16.32 LPA for the 2024-26 batch of 356 students, with 74+ companies taking part. That is a fair result for a younger IIM, but it is a fresher’s number. It tells you little about what a manager with 8 years of experience gains from the institute’s blended MBA.
6. Blended IIM with best ROI for working professionals
For someone already earning ₹15 lakh a year, a full-time two-year MBA has a hidden cost: about ₹30 lakh in lost salary. Add that to the fee, and IIM Ahmedabad’s full-time PGP costs close to ₹57.5 lakh in real terms. Even IIM Lucknow, the ROI leader, comes to about ₹50.75 lakh.
A blended MBA removes that cost. You attend classes on weekends and visit campus for short periods, so your salary keeps coming in. That is why the true cost of an MBA depends more on format than on the name of the institute.
True cost comparison for a professional earning ₹15 lakh a year
| Programme | Credential | Fee | Salary lost | True cost | Data & AI focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIM Nagpur Blended MBA in Data Science & Management | Full MBA degree + alumni status | ₹12,10,000 | Nil | ₹12.1 lakh | Deep: Python/R, ML, GenAI, agentic AI, NLP |
| IIM Ahmedabad Blended PGP (Online MBA) | Full MBA degree + alumni status | ₹20,00,000 | Nil | ₹20 lakh | General management |
| IIM Lucknow full-time PGP | Full MBA degree | ₹20.75 lakh | ₹30 lakh | ₹50.75 lakh | Elective-based |
| IIM Ahmedabad full-time PGP | Full MBA degree | ₹27.50 lakh | ₹30 lakh | ₹57.5 lakh | Elective-based |
| IIM Calcutta Advanced Programme in Data Sciences | Certificate (not a degree) | ₹4,80,000 + 18% GST | Nil | About ₹5.7 lakh | Deep data science; no MBA core |
Salary lost assumes two years away from a ₹15 lakh job. Full-time fees are from Cracku (August 2026); blended and certificate fees are from learn.vcnow.in.
How to read this table
IIM Ahmedabad carries the strongest brand, ranked #1 on NIRF and IIRF in 2025, but its blended MBA costs ₹7.9 lakh more than IIM Nagpur’s. Full-time PGPs give a campus experience and placements, yet they cost a working professional at least four times as much once you count lost salary. IIM Calcutta’s certificate is the cheapest route to data skills, though it does not give you an MBA. Among the IIM MBA degrees here, IIM Nagpur has the lowest true cost and the only data science and AI core.
7. Factors that decide ROI at different IIMs
Several things push an IIM’s ROI up or down. Here are the ones that matter most:
8. How to choose the right IIM based on ROI
Start with your situation, not the ranking. A fresher and a manager with 8 years of experience will reach different answers from the same data.
Quick guide
| Your priority | IIMs to consider |
|---|---|
| Best ROI while keeping your job, with data and AI skills | IIM Nagpur Blended MBA in Data Science & Management |
| Top brand while keeping your job | IIM Ahmedabad Blended PGP |
| Best full-time ROI | IIM Lucknow |
| Highest full-time brand value | IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta |
| Strong salary with balanced fees | IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore |
| Strong emerging full-time option | IIM Ranchi, IIM Rohtak |
| Operations and supply chain | IIM Mumbai |
9. A worked example: full-time vs blended ROI
Take a hypothetical professional, Sneha, aged 29. She is a senior analyst at an IT services firm in Hyderabad, with 6 years of experience and a salary of ₹15 lakh a year.
Option one is a full-time PGP at IIM Ahmedabad. Her true cost would be about ₹57.5 lakh: ₹27.5 lakh in fees plus ₹30 lakh in lost salary. If she then earns the batch average of about ₹34.45 lakh, her yearly gain over her old salary is ₹19.45 lakh. Recovering ₹57.5 lakh would take roughly three years.
Option two is IIM Nagpur’s Blended MBA in Data Science & Management. Here, her total cost is ₹12.1 lakh and she loses no salary. Suppose the degree helps her move into an analytics manager role at ₹21 lakh. Her ₹6 lakh yearly gain would cover the fee in about two years.
These salary outcomes are assumptions for illustration, not promises. Still, the maths shows why format matters so much: the blended route asks her to risk less than a quarter of the money.
10. IIM with best ROI in 2026: conclusion
For freshers, IIM Lucknow offers the best fee-to-salary ratio in 2026, followed by Bangalore, Calcutta and Ahmedabad. For working professionals, lost salary changes the maths. A blended IIM MBA keeps your income safe, and IIM Nagpur’s MBA in Data Science & Management gives you a full IIM degree with in-demand data and AI skills at the lowest true cost among the IIM MBA degrees we compared.

11. Frequently asked questions
Which IIM has the best ROI in 2026?
For a full-time PGP, IIM Lucknow tops Cracku’s August 2026 ranking with a ₹33.20 LPA average CTC on a ₹20.75 lakh fee, a ratio of 1.60x. For working professionals, IIM Nagpur’s Blended MBA in Data Science & Management has the lowest true cost among the IIM MBA degrees on VCNow, at ₹12,10,000 with no salary lost.
Which blended IIM MBA has the best ROI?
Among blended IIM MBA degrees on VCNow, IIM Nagpur’s Blended MBA in Data Science & Management costs ₹12,10,000, compared with ₹20,00,000 for IIM Ahmedabad’s Blended PGP. Both let you keep your salary, but only IIM Nagpur’s programme has a full data science and AI core.
How is IIM ROI calculated?
Cracku divides the average annual CTC by the total programme fee. For working professionals, a fairer method adds the salary you give up to the fee, and then compares that true cost with your expected salary gain.
Is it worth leaving a job for a full-time IIM MBA?
It can be, if you are early in your career or want a big switch through campus placements. However, someone earning ₹15 lakh a year gives up about ₹30 lakh over two years, so a blended MBA often pays back faster.
Should I choose an IIM only based on ROI?
No. ROI is one factor, along with brand, alumni network, curriculum, format and your career goal. For instance, a data and AI focus may matter more than a small difference in average salary.
